In Jyotish, Vedic astrology, the key factor in determining a person’s qualities is not just the birth date, which shows the Sun sign (changing once a month), but also the position of the Moon (changing sign every two and a half days), and the Lagna — the Ascendant (changing sign roughly every two hours!).
What’s more, nakshatras are taken into account — the so-called lunar constellations, which occupy a smaller span in the sky (13°20′ versus the 30º of a zodiac sign), making the determination of dominant energies a bit more complex, but far more precise than going by birth date alone, and requiring more exact input — the place and time of birth.

The lunar calendar contains the key points of the Moon’s movement: ekadashis (the eleventh lunar day on both the waxing and waning Moon) with the prescribed fast and the exact window for breaking it (parana), new and full moons, and eclipses with their type, sign, and nakshatra — adjusted to Your location.
Panchanga is the 5 components of a day’s combined energy:
• nakshatra, the lunar constellation — strength and the use of strength;
• vara, the day of the week — durability and the event’s life force;
• tithi, the lunar day — the quality of circumstances;
• karana, the half lunar day — the strength to accomplish;
• yoga, the quality of the day — ties all elements together.
